After reading the rest of the answers here it really makes me wonder what kind of advice people are getting here.

Latitude of kind of a business model. While Inspiron is kind of a home model.

But, for the most part the difference is the size and weight. The latitude series is more lightweight than the inspiron models.

The reason the latitude is the business model is because primarily that is the laptop that is going to be moving around quite frequently.

As far as memory, it does depend on what kind of games she plays.

1 Gb of RAM should be just fine, but 512 will probably work.

If she is playing the newer age games you will want to customize the laptop to have a better graphics card, preferably one 256 Mb ones.

Linda is confused. The Inspiron is the home version. The latitude is the business version. Either can be fine, but expect to pay a little more on the latitude.

As for memory, it depends on what kind of games. Solitare? no. Halo 2, yes. Regardless, ALWAYS get a 3 year warranty on laptops - they are subject to far more abuse than a desktop and repairs often cost more, further the parts are often more expensive on laptops than desktops, and sometimes difficult to get. Second, MINIMUM RAM should be 512. If you want to be able to run Vista WELL, then you should double that AT LEAST and consider going as high as 2GB.

First, the Inspiron costs much less. It is more state of the art, according to Dell, and thus possibly less stable.

My son is in med school and the school's official policy is that all students buy Latitude. They are specifically designed so that virtually all parts are interchangeable, whereas the Inspiron may change all the time.

Games, if you mean fast, intense video games are maximum users of memory and processor speed. Get a lot of both if your family can and wants to afford it.

But, there is no need to pay the bonus for Latitude.

I have both an Inspiron and a Latitude. Personally, I like the Inspiron better.

Inspiron is the business version, Latitude is the home version. Neither is better than the other. More important is getting one with the RAM, hard drive, optical drive, and video card that she needs. Just check the specs and go with one that has the features she needs.

I have an Inspiron XPS M140 and I'm very happy with it. Mine has 2GB RAM and Pentium M 1.86ghz processor so it will run any application I throw at it. :-)

Most important is the amount of RAM. For games, the more the better.

I don't know. Do you want to feel inspired or do you just want to go around saying "lattitude!"

LOL
