First, the technical answer. You're slightly below average (at least on this test), but within one standard deviation of average, so you're pretty much right there with most of the world.

What to make of this fact is slightly more complicated. Some studies suggest that 3 points won't make much of a difference for very high or very low scores (that is, a 157 IQ is going to be about as successful as a 160 IQ), but that when you're close to average, 3 points can make a tremendous difference in terms of earning power. A person with a 105 IQ will tend to do much better than someone with a 102 IQ.

On the other hand, it's pretty well established that some things about IQ are fishy. For instance, it measures verbal, analytical, and spatial intelligence, but Howard Gardner and other intelligence experts believe there are as many as seven (some say nine) types of intelligence, most of which aren't measured by the test. So you could be a genius in some other way, and the test wouldn't spot it.

Another fishy thing is that we have to keep recalibrating the tests (to keep 100 at average) because every generation or so, IQ scores worldwide go up a full standard deviation. This is termed the Flynn effect, after the fellow who noticed it. That is, the whole world seems to be getting smarter. At the same time that we're doing this fiddling with IQ, we have to keep making the SATs easier, because average scores on those tests are dropping from generation to generation. So one's going up and the other is going down, even though, historically, the two have been correlated.

Personally, I think the best thing to do with IQ scores is ignore them. Eat fish, avoid lead paint, get some sleep, and read a lot. Talk to smart people, and assume the world is a complex place. Then try to understand it. You'll get smarter, and you'll forget about this whole IQ business, the primary use of which is to boast (if your score is high) or to insult (if someone else's is low, or perceived to be).

Between 90 and 110 is average, below 70 you are retarded. So you're average...
But actually it doesn't matter, because it only says something about your intellectual being. It depends also on the way you took the test: were you stressed, did you liket he person who took it and so on...Your score can change when you take it again...
Besides that, your EQ (emotional quotient) is very important to, maybe even more important.
It doesn't matter wether you a genius with an IQ of 140...If you can't interact with other people or if you can't imagine someone's feelings, than you have also a problem.
It's only the total of all these things (itellectual and emotional) that says something correctly about you...
and this test was actually designed for children with a maximum age of 12...so, if you're older, it isn't really correct...

Its very slightly below average as the tests are designed to give 100 as the average IQ

To the best of my knowledge below 80 is less than normal IQ. 150 or above is considered genious and around 100 is average.

A perfectly average IQ is 100, and 97 is very close to that - you aren't stupid...

Nope. But don't put too much stake in it. Take it again. You will get a different score. Maybe 102 next time! Then you will be slightly above average!

I think 110 is average, but 97 isn't bad.

Think of it this way: only a little more than half of the people you meet are smarter than you.
