Climbers measure the air pressure at their target elevation to determine whether they will need to carry oxygen tanks. The air gets thinner the higher you go, so it gets a lot harder to breathe. All you have to do is go from a city like Chicago to either Denver or Colorado Springs for a weekend to experience the difference. And Denver is only 5,280 feet above sea level (Colorado Springs is 8,200 feet above sea level), so imagine someone trying to climb a mountain that's over 15,000 feet up.
