In the UK, a blue background is used for signs on a motorway, or at the start of a slip road leading to a motorway.
Blue is also used as the background to motorway names and directions on otherwise white (normal roads) or green (trunk roads) signs, so it is easy to distinguish a direction to a motorway from other routes.
