Gothic is supposed to refer to Germanic tribes that eventually destroyed the Roman empire after she split into an east side and west side of the empire. I don't remember all their names (there were 4) but i do remember the Oligoths and the Visigoths (who mixed with the Romans to create the modern Spanish and French).

Goths today (those who dress like this) are supposed to be a dark and depressed people who feel the world is a very bad place and is so because of the greed and evil of those now in charge of the world (governments and business leaders). Goths also feel though that the system is too big and so we are essentially stuck with the world the way it is now and that there is no other kind of life for us (since even if we return to nature we'd be living the way animals live with constant fear of our lives in danger from predators).

As far as dressing for work that way, it is a bad idea if you want to move up or even keep the job very long but they feel they are expressing themselves in the way they dress and so they only want to dress that way so they can express themselves (not specifically for work but more for themselves).

Being goth has nothing to do with what clothes you wear or music you listen to, it is a way of thinking and seeing the world. The clothes that goths wear and the music that goths listen to is just a reflection of that mindset. Goths see that there is extreme pain and evil in the world, along with the good. Instead of condemning it or ignoring it, goths accept these things as a part of life and try and enjoy the good along with the bad, since they can't stop the bad from happening. They are not obsessed with death, they just accept it as an inevitability. They do not try and cause more pain in their (or anybody else's) lives, since there is plenty to start with. Goths tend to be kind, intelligent, non-violent, emotional, and artistic.

Most goths don't wear anything over the top to work. They have clothing to go to clubs and be seen in as well as everyday clothing. Their everyday clothing is workplace appropriate, although they often wear black. But again, being goth is a lifestyle and a mindset, and clothing is not a good way to determine who is goth.

The Gothic Romantic movement was a lifestyle that originted from British Punk fashion and music in the late 70's. It was an embrace of topics that were not positive and the revel of gloom contrasting the rise of bubblegum pop and pastel clothing. Over time it has been fueled by religious discontent, shock rock, drug culture and the pop explosion of vampirism.
Goths dress in the manner they do for exactly the same reasons you dress as you do, it's comfortable for them and it expresses their self-image. They don't alter their dress when they go to work because conformity is not their perogative. Goth's feel that they have a right to be accepted as they are as there is nothing wrong with them
