"Protect the U.S. Homeland The attacks of September 11, 2001 have made us feel a vulnerability not felt in more than fifty years. We have spent hundreds of billions of dollars a year defending our allies in Western Europe and East Asia and distributed tens of billions more in foreign aid to countries throughout the developing world. These high-profile foreign policy programs have only bred resentment against us and made us enemies. It is time to sharply scale back our foreign involvement and turn our attention to the real threats facing Americans: a sagging economy, decaying schools, a shaky health care system, and inadequate resources to protect against terrorism, even if this may upset the worldwide balance of power and cause insecure countries to seek nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons." (from a program of the Watson Institute at Brown Univ.)

I ask this because I am writing a paper on what the US role in the world is, do you agree with this statement.

Well there are different things here there is the US Government - its foreign policy its development policy and economic policy. Then you have the impact of its economic and foreign investment and trade with the rest of the world and then you have the role of the USA population.

THe US would have great difficulty withdrawing from the rest of the world especially as it is going to need more fuel resources.

The main actors in the international sphere change frequently and the EU Russia and China among others would fill the void.

Dealing with the terrorist threat more effectively may mean that it needs to deal with its foreign policy and the perceived lack of legitimacy of the USA at the moment.
The USA is not likely to be less agressive internationally when it has such a big arms industry that holds such power in the government.

The US has a duty to the world as its only super power, whatever America does it will get some negative emotion from some countries but what needs to be made clear is that as the worlds only super power the actions of the US affect everyone.

Other countries also help their allies and give money to developing worlds but they haven't received the resentment that the US has. I think the problem here is that the US feels they have the right to police the world, but in turn they step on toes. The US SHOULD look after its own people, but equally it has a responsibility to fulfil in the world.

Living in his own world? Funny as I would say the same about you. The economy not sagging??? Your right...minimum wage can pretty much buy a gallon of milk. Look at the increase in poverty level, the middel america is slowly disappearing. You must be in the upper class to think the economy is doing better. Not sure why you made the comparison of our economy to other countries either...I mean with that singleminded point of view we can always be doing 5 times better than some country out there.

I completely agree with your statement, and being a veteran of the us military, I can say with knowledge that we are over extending ourselves and trying to play world police. Now that america is on top we are so scared of losing the number one spot that we are practically trying to control every world event and country on the planet.

Picking between him and kerry reminded me of the southpark episode where they were picking a mascot for their school...who do you vote for douche? or turd sandwhich? Well I guess turd sandwhich lost...because I think Bush is a Douche.

The statement is based on a desire to return to the days of american Isolationism from the early 20th century. It is impossible to not be Global in today's world.
By the way, the US economy is not sagging (it is growing faster the past 5 years than any other industrialized nation), our schools are not decaying, and the US is the world's leader in medicine and medical advances. So the author is obviously living in his own fantasy world.

Absolutely, I think the concept is great, however the reality is somewhat more limited. The problem is that our economy is tied to the rest of the world, and withdrawing from concern over the problems of the world would impact our own economy and national security.

things that are happening are symptoms. We need to go after causes not messengers. such as people who want power would always have wars. people who want more regardless of what is fare or not, will always cause fight. problems is not bush, it is the human nature. that can be changed. We need to go after why we have somebody who becomes a terrorist, rather than just go and kill the terrorist. we need to understand why he becomes one and eliminate those causes. We can start by not having self interest. whenever somebody has interest in something, sometimes they want to get it if it means slaghtering people. that is why people need some kind of faith, if they don't have moral values there is no other things that keeps them from doing smth bad.

I don't know. It makes us seem like we're the Gods of the universe. That we make everything go around and that's just not true. Although we play a huge part in the world, I wouldn't agree with that statement.
