It's a sad day in the world when a machine can't hold a large load. I know of many people who have this problem....with their machines.......
I personally have a machine that will hold any size load. My husband always overstuffs the machine but it handles it..
The only downside to having a large load is that you do end up needing more soap... I find myself almost swimming in it! There is so much!!
As to why the clothes came out damp, I have no answer for you. I would suggest trying to turn up the spin cycle and giving the machine a run for it's money.

well, the clothes should be damp after coming out of the washing machine, but, if they're overly damp, then you've overloaded it. You'll have to take half out, probably rewash since they may not have gotten a good wash since overloaded, and do the same with the other half.
I don't know why I even clicked on you question...I kept saying I wasn't going to do it, but I did it anyway.....oh, my dirty mind. lol
