It is a business-specific term, but can be generalized to many other things. In any process where you are sacrificing some quantity to get an even greater amount of that quantity, there is the possibility that you don't get back as much as you sacrifice. Given time, this can be overcome, and eventually one gets back as much as one has sacrificed (spent). This is breaking even, and known as the "break-even point."

When starting a business, an initial investment of money is required, and then usually a constant recurring cost is involved. In the beginning stages of the business, you will probably not get more money in profit than you spent. If and when you eventually do, you have reached the break-even point.

Break even means that you are at a point where there are no gains, no losses. Financially, most companies will budget to a break even point where they can allocate or even eliminate some expenses to meet income.

Example: you paid 100 dollars for chips to sit in a poker game. After a while, you started winning and you ended up with 300 dollars. If you were to continue gambling, and you lose 200 dollars, you broke even. You did not lose your initial 100, nore did you profit from it. If you were to quit at 300, you would have made a 200 dollar profit.

Break even is the point where you are not losing money, but not making money either.

Businesses want to know this so they will have an idea of how much money and time they will have to invest, and how many units they will have to sell to recoup their investment and start making a profit.
