The age of the universe is calculated , relative to the big bang , cuz they get data from a Microwave Anisotropy Probe . (13.7 billion years) .There is no way of measuring anything that existed before th big bang , (yet) .The age of the Univere could be infinit .
However , you know that light from other galaxies shows events from the distant past . If ever , telescopes should get powerfull enough ,we could , posibly , capture light from before the big bang (if there was any ) that's about as far as we can get within the next 100 years .

this particular universe began (came to exist) at the big bang 13-15 billion years ago. what existed before the big bang doesn't pertain to this universe. what happened before the big bang is not knowable because none of the information concerning those events has been transmitted into this universe. that information may exist in another universe but we haven't discovered it yet.

13.7 Billion years old. There are a few different ways to estimate it, outlined here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_the_Universe .

As for the rest of your quesiton, things didn't happen and time didn't exist before the big bang because time is defined for us by our universe. If there was anything before our universe popped up it would be meaningless to us because we can only expirience and understand things in our own universe.

Our people have come to the conclusion that the Universe has no beginning and no end. It IS, and that is all. We find it amusing that humans try and figure this out when they cannot even build a craft that will safely take themselves out of their own solar system.
