A bed and breakfast is usually a smaller house (unlike a hotel that's large.) It holds a few occupants and they offer breakfast. Think victorian house with rooms for the guests.

In Britain a "b & b" is a private residence that takes paying overnight guests and provides bed and breakfast. Some of them offer (for an additional fee) packed lunches and/or eat-in dinners by prior arrangement. They are normally small (two to five or six guest rooms), the service is personal, the house and business is run by the owners and you would expect to meet them informally.

A "hotel" can be small or large, individually owned or part of a chain. By law I think the word "hotel" requires the establishment to offer rooms on a per night basis. In reality, MOST hotels offer breakfast lunch and dinner to guests who pay for them, and have a bar (they are "licensed"), and a "lounge" (a place where guests can sit around, i.e. 'lounge' on easy chairs). Many offer more mealtime flexibility ie you can have breakfast earlier or later than at a b&b. Many offer room service. Some have many other facilities such as conference rooms, internet service etc.

But don't assume anything is available without asking before buying.

A bed & breakfast is usually an old mansion that has been remodeled and furnished with very nice antique or reproduction furniture. The breakfast that goes with the room is a delicious and not your usual continental breakfast of donuts. It's not unusual to get blueberry pancakes. The breakfasts are also made to order and NOT a breakfast bar.

B & Bs are luxurious and above hotel standard. Many do not accept children under a certain age or pets so check before you book rooms. Because they are small, there's often a waiting list to get in.

To the answers you have, with which I agree, I would add that a Hotel is usually more expensive but that because it is usually larger it probably has services you would not find in a family B & B.

A Bed and breakfast is in a private house, with the owners living there too.

A hotel is simply not a private house, not declared as a primary residence by its owners.
