That's a wide open question. Sounds like someone's pushing you in one direction & your heart's pushing you in another. My husband wanted to go to cooking school & has always regretted not going. Although he's spent his entire career in the restaurant business, he is not a chef.

If you do go, go to the CIA. It's the only one with a reputation good enough to give you the training you need to get you a reputable job. And, don't count on becoming a chef upon graduation. You'll probably be a line cook for many, many years before being promoted to sous chef, then chef,if you didn't know that already. While you're working as a line cook, you can consider your options as a law school candidate.

Be prepared to work long, hard hours. Nights, weekends & holidays. Anytime everyone else has off, you'll be working. There are fringe benefits, though, such as, free dinners at other restaurants where your friends work, wine samples, trips to the wine country, etc. So, if you truly have a passion for food, go for it. Otherwise, become a foodie, a lawyer, cook as a hobby and always wish you'd gone to cooking school.

The restaurant business sucks. High turnover, low pay, and unless you go to work for a chain - no benefits. And if you do get a job with a " good" restaurant, you can forget about weekends off, you'll have to work on Christmas, Thanksgiving, Mother's Day, Valentines Day, Easter, etc... While other people are out enjoying their time off you'll be working. The kitchen environment consists of stainless steel and white plastic; no windows. So if you don't like your family or like having fun with your friends, go to cooking school where you'll spend a ton of money and get a job that pays about 21,000 a year.

I know this from personal experience. Your pay will be kept low as there are many non-citizens who can do this job much more cheaply than you will.

Follow your passion. You're not going to be successful and make money at something you don't like doing or are not good at. Law is a hard slog if you don't like doing it and you will likely get weeded out early. On the other hand, spending your life in a kitchen is no picnic if its not your passion.

Jethro Bobine of the Beverly hillbillies had this same dilemma. he was going to be a brain surgeon or a fry cook. ultimately he became a fry cook because they get to eat all they want.
