Seriously...think about it. How do you hug? Is there any psychological and social reasoning behind why people position their arms above or below the other person's? Or...is it just a matter of who touches who first???

That is very funny and I have thought of this many times. Glad I'm not the only one thinking of these random questions. I think it all depends on who goes for the embrace first, how well you know the person, etc. etc. There's also the diagnol hug where one arm is over the other person's shoulder and the other arm is under their opposite arm. I had a boss that gave fake hugs--she'd lean in with one arm to go around my neck and keep her other arm behind her back. Not sure if she was a germ phobe or was concerned I'm may embrace her with a bear hug. There's also the awkward hug where you hug someone you're not that close to out of friendliness and your boobs get in the way.

Well in my case because I'm tall most times my hands are on top. I think height has a lot to do with it. In the case where two people are the same height it's probably a matter of who hugs who first but it could also be chance.

I'm 6'3" and most folks are below my arm reach and yes this is not a psychological thing. When my baby girl hugs me it at the knees. Does that mean she has a psychological problem??

I'm not sure either.
I've seen that when it comes to males and females. Alot of males hug below the waist of female, or around that area. And Females hug above when it comes to males.
Anything else its pretty much random. Correct me if I'm wrong hug experts! lol (:

I guess it depends on who I'm hugging. If they are much taller than I am, then my arms are usually below theirs just because of height. However, when I hug my husband my arms are over his and he is taller.

Generally above, because I tend to have to compensate for my shortness by standing on tip-toes and hugging whoever around the neck.

Actually I usually have one arm above and around the persons shoulder and neck and the other down and around the waist. It just seems to be natural to me.

It all depends on their height... (for me at least) i hug above if the person i am hugging isn't that tall and if to tall i will prefer below. if it is a baby of course i wrap almost my entire body to hug him/her. good question...

I actually have one arm up and one arm down...maybe I feel like I get closer that way...
but when I hug my boyfriend, it's different...I go underneath a lot because I feel safe that way.
