Anybody, placed in the right (wrong) circumstances, could become a murderer or a torturer. Just imagine: you are a good father, a pacifist, you come home to find your wife and kids murdered, the killer is still there, wouldn't you lose it and kill him with your bare hands? OK, maybe not types like Mother Theresa or the Dalai-Lama, but...There may be some genetic predisposition to violence and anger, but for the most part it is the right mix of social environment and circumstances that will determine the outcome.

It is not an either or question. But, you first should define what you mean by murder. And what it means "to become a killer?" And what do you mean by genetically?

Is it murder only if the law says it is so?
Is capital punishment murder? It is legal and sanctioned by the government.
Abortion murder? It is legal, but some might argue that it is murder.
Acts of killing people in war? Some would argue that it is.

First, let's examine "killer" or in this case homicide.

Homicide is to kill another human.

Our laws generally break into murder (1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree) and manslaughter (involuntary and voluntary).

The primary difference in the two is premeditation.

So if you want to know if anyone can coldly plan to kill another person and carry through on that plan, I think that though most have the capability, but living in societies as we do, we do not consider that a viable alternative to the problems at hand.

Manslaughter is different. The action that killed, though not premeditated, a reasonable person would expect it to kill. It's more of if it's and accident or if you didn't care what happened to anyone else. I think most people could do something to get involuntary manslaughter, because most people have lapses of judgment. Voluntary manslaughter I think fewer people would have such a disregard for others, again because of the societies we live in, that many people would fall into that category either.

Bottom line, we can all kill, it's why we kill that's the issue.

Genetics may have to something to do with it, although it has not been proven. I think people become murderers due to a series of social factors which surround and affect them. A poor education, violence in the family, poor social skills, are a few things that may influence people in becoming murderers. People who are criminals may also become killers due to what may happen during a robbery, which may force the person to kill someone. This may trigger something in the person and make him or her accustomed to killing.

no it certainly is not genetic. one basically becomes a murderer when he murders someone!

while hot tempers and anger management problems, the root of some murders, can be hereditary, killing is not an occupation which can be passed from generation to generation!

murder is a drastic action and it can be either planned, or sudden. they're put together by a motive becoming a scheme and possibly including weapons and accomplices (and the CID).

In a word yes. Having a pre disposition to murder is very rare thank goodness, in fact the majority of murders are by people known to each other and are in the main caused by lack of control during stressful incidents or whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In fact given the right set of circumstances most of us would kill. Think about defence of your own or a loved ones life etc.

It's not genetic. Though some are more predisposed through upbringing or personality disorders. Most murderers lack the ability to feel compassion for others.

It is possible that some people are wired genetically with a mental illness that might make them more susceptible to killing people. But honestly that's never an excuse to commit murder. We all have free will, and it is simply a matter of choice, as no one can make you kill unless you choose to.
