People who are mean seek control - they love the power they feel when they put someone else down. The best thing you can do is ignore them -then their power is relinquished. When you let them bother you and get to you, then they've won. If you can ignore them, they will get bored and move on to someone else.

Dealing with difficult people is something we all have faced one time or another, the one thing to understand about mean people is this...they all have different approaches, some are aggressive, some are mean in a more subtle way, others, use tactics that if you are not one step ahead you would assume they were being nice, but really they just want to make you look a fool...in past experience the way i deal with such people is to play them at their own game...if a person is mean to you in front of a crowd of people just hold your nerve, and react diplomatically, and intelligently, they end up looking real bad, and the fool, or the other option is to just ignore them, but with the realization that they are feeling insecure in themselves, and have to be mean in order for them to feel much better about themselves (how sad is that).
