Marvolo Riddle would have been the first to die. He died when he returned home from Azkaban and found that Merope had deserted him. That was before Voldemort was even born and long before he killed Tom Riddle Sr. or his grandparents.
It is never stated that Dumbledore killed Grindewald, he is just credited for *defeating* him. Dumbledore believed that killing was evil and that there are worse things than death. He didn't even try to kill Voldemort during their duel.

Who was the first person to die that we know about in the Harry Potter Series .... According to the books the first person to die would be:
Grindelwald

I don't think any other character that we know about from the Harry Potter series died before 1945.

Chronolgically the first person to die in the Harry Potter series has to be Harry's father James Potter.

Depends if you include things that happen before the books but are referenced in the stories. If you start from where the books start which would be the day after Harry's parents died I think the next person we know who dies is Quirell.
