That there really were characters in the childrens TV programme Captain Pugwash called;

Seaman Stains
Roger the Cabin Boy
Master Bates.

The myth was that no-one noticed the cheeky writers naughty names for years, but sadly its not true. None of these characters existed in the kids version, only in a special adult one off written years later.

that drinking beer through a straw gets you drunk quicker.
that the army has started recruiting ethnic minorities to act as guides in Iraq and Afghanistan,and that four poles had applied.

Tipping cows. It's true that most urban legends COULD happen, but many involve murder or mayhem. I could more easily see someone deciding to tip a cow than to hide under someone's car and ....

Or the one about the chemical that turns a color if you pee in the pool. I actually believed that one until last year or so. (I just assumed no one whose pool I had been in was using it....)

Good question.

I think it was the one about the tv licence detector vans that were supposed to be dring round the country, finding out who hadn't paid their licence, detecting if they were watching the tele, then busting them.

I believed that for years.
