Is it some kind of secret ritual they "have" to go through? My experiements suggest this ritual is universal.

Spiders don't bother me, I can dispose of them without the help of a man, it's moths that send me screaming in the other direction.

It's just girls that are afraid of spiders. Great. I've got to get over this spider thing now. I'm getting older though, maybe I can run out the clock just avoiding them! Funny though, after the X wives I thought that girls and spiders had a lot in common, jeez maybe even hang out together and share stories. Black widows spring to mind in particular!

I actually really like spiders and when I was in Africa I spent an immense amount of time playing with a rainbow one in my room, till someone said it was poisonous. I think their great. My dad is 6'4'', built like a hammer and was shot twice when he was a medic in the RAF and he says he'd rather be shot again than enter a room with a spider in it...We have a big one that lives behind the fire place I've named him George, my dad legs it from the room if he comes out to say hi!

Because other girls/mothers etc always said "eww groossss" when they saw a spider when the girl was growing up. She learnt that it was what you were suppossed to do when you saw a spider.

Boys are afraid of crying in public for exactly the same reason - other boys/fathers always told the boys that only girls cried, and that they should be a "man".

I have this discussion quite a bit with my family. I do not like spiders; my mom does not like snakes. If someone else is around and can kill the spider...by all means, I'll let them. However, if I'm by myself, I must do the dirty work. I do not like to kill spiders with tissues because I feel like they can climb or jump on top of the tissue and bite me. My mom says spiders do not bother here because she is bigger than they are. I say snakes do not bother me because in the area where we live it is highly highly unlikely a snake will crawl in my bed and bite me on the neck as a spider did to my mom several months ago. Spiders are small and common household pests--depending on your region, snakes are not.

I don't know if that answers your question-but arachnaphobia is a real phobia--fear of spiders as is claustrophobia--fear of enclosed spaces. Also, my brother is guy and will ask my mom to kill a spider before he will do it himself.

Actually, I don't hate spiders - I'm just scared of the ones with hairy legs. If they too small to see the legs, no bother. If the legs are long and thin and itty bitty sspidy perched atop, no bother. Fat black spider hairy legs Yaaaaargggghhh....! run a mile.
Its cos I can't tell which way they gonna run - no front and back on those things :-((
(Try it - you might agree..)

i am currently holding one prisoner, 11 days ago a spider inflitrated my house, being caught, and kept in a jar, 3 days later, he had the company of a crippled spider called les, and another jar mate called Boris. Sadly Les and Boris are no longer with us, i believe the cripple was eaten and les died of heat exhaustan, but Clive is being fed, and watered and kept out of the heat.
Not all girls are scared, only some, my girl -friend is keen on clive, but my mates gf hates him, so i guess its each to their own!

Because they look grotesque - they have spindly legs (8 of them) and loads of eyes and they scuttle in a horrible way. And you always find them in your bath or your bedroom wall or some other place where you REALLY don't want to find a spider!

Ugh, they give me the shivers.

The good thing for you is that you men can take advantage of our fears and show off how "macho" you are by getting rid of them for us!

Not all girls are afraid of spiders, but I sure am! I think it's because we have black widows and they are very poisoness. I also hate the way they look. those eight long spindly legs and how quickly they move. I've actually had one chase me. Yegads. Forgeta' bout it!

It's funny,I never was.I happen to love spiders, especially wolf spiders.I've always found them fascinating and find it amazing how some build and rebuild their webs.Every now and then if I can catch one I let it crawl over my hands.Their eyes are most intriquing of all.Mabe I'm flat out weird.
