Once you reach a certain age, I am 42, you probably have a better idea of what is important enough to make a statement to the rest of the world in the form of a permanent mark on your skin. I am so glad I did not get a tattoo when I was younger because much of what was important to me then, seems insignificant now. What was important then and is still important to me today is why I chose to get my tattoo.

people in the midlife might do so for different reasons:
they might be feeling lonely, so to while away their time and to divert their minds from the actual 'heading no way' situation.
they now understand that their shouldn't be any space to think what others will think.
this might be their desire during youth, which they want to fulfill now.
it might be their passion: you know people who are young at heart!

many people, women especially, dont get tattoos when they have small children because it doesnt look good with the other mothers. they look down on moms who express themselves with tattoos and think the children are from drug families, etc.
i was at a play group once with my daughter and was wearing my Metallica t-shirt--i was snubbed by all the other mothers there, including the instructors! narrow minded bitches!
then after that , i went in typical mommy clothes and they all talked to me like they were my best friends! Hypocrites!

Because they can act on impulses w/o so many concerns. So they are fulfilling desires from years ago.
