c) getting rates from different shipping companies, and finding out what's cheapest (dhl / fedex / ups)

The price of shipping is just being added into the products price. It's a marketing strategy...people hate to see "added" charges, including shipping charges. Just make it a flat fee and say "Free shipping" Of course, make this inside the 48 states and make a note that there is a surcharge for international/overseas shipping or you could get bit there.
