The biological reason could be chromosomal. They can do test for that, but it could also be many many different reasons could be not enough oxygen at birth, could be head trauma. There are many factors as to why someone can be mildly retarded. My little sister is labeled that way and she has had test after test to try to figure out why this happened to her, but we never found any reason. So the whole family figured there was no reason to keep testing her and having to take her into the hospital all the time. As far as educational, look into your local government. My sister also had problems with speech and they set her up with a wonder speech therapist. Look into the board of M.R.D.D.there are so many places that will help. Good luck.

Speech therapy and evaluation would be a good start. There can be many reasons for mental retardation, such as environmental factors, prenatal care, and just sometimes luck. There are many things to do and programs to help parents of children with mental retardation. Sometimes children are just slow with speech and cognition. Evaluation is the first step and then go from there. Early Intervention is the next crucial step if there is a problem.

1st have the child tested for delays. In the mean time try P.E.C.S. Picture Exchange Comunication System. Do a search on the web to learn more about it. And you can make your own pictures to do this. I have used this with many delayed children and with autistic children. I does work and it does take some time but it is a great way of comunicating wants and needs of a child who may not be able to verbaly express themselves.

get a hold of a speech tharapist. mental retardation occures before the age of 21. it can be caused by a number of things from low oxygen to a high feaver. a child bearing mother who messes with kitty litter has a good chance of having a child with mental retardation or other health problems. alot of people don't know that. led in your paint. another thing you may want to do if you haven't already. get your childs ears checked. good luck and i hope this helps.

i have a three yr old daughter who fits that description. right now she's enrolled in a early childhood special ed class for her speech delay and to give her more interaction with kids her age. i've noticed a BIG difference with her comprehension and verbalization skills. don't get me wrong she's not speaking at a post- grad level but seeing where she was verbally a year ago and where she's at now i'm proud to say she's on the right track :) so check with your local school district about early childhood intervention. oh ya, "hooked on phonics," might also be a good supplement.
