If you are a US citizen, you don't need a passport or birth certificate to go other states like AK and HI nor to US territories like the US Virgin Islands. Just govenment-issued photo ID to get on the plane (usually a driver's license, but it could be military or state government ID).

If you are not a US citizen and are coming from overseas, you need a passport from your country and a US visa (Canada, UK, Western Europe, Austrailia, New Zealand, etc don't need a visa).

If you are not a US citizen but have cleared immigration already or snuck in, you just need a US state driver's license to get on the plane. A foreign driver's license would be difficult because they'd expect you to have a passport if you're allowed to be here so you might get pulled aside for questioning.

Yes you need to be a US citizen to go to Alaska and Hawaii, or get an US visa. I am not sure about US Virgin Islands however.

No. Check with the cruise line to establish what identification you will need at boarding. Usually a passport or other equally positive identity document will work.
