First, suck up the water either with a wet and dry vac or with the carpet cleaner. Then shampoo or clean the carpet. Then set up a fan blowing on the carpet. While you are at the Depot, get DampRid moisture absorption crystals and the DampRid Mold and Mildew Remover and Preventative. The absorption crystals come in a plastic tub, take the lid off and leave it in the center of the wet spot. It will take excess moisture out of the air and carpet to help it dry faster. Spray the area with the DampRid Mold and Mildew spray to kill any spores and prevent the mildew from growing in the carpet and padding. Keep the fan running for a couple of days or until you cannot place a terry towel over the spot, hop on it and have a wet spot on the towel. Good luck.

Shut water off to the water heater, replace with a new one. Remove carpet and squeegee or vacuum, hang up the carpet in the sun to prevent mould.

Yes, get one.....first use the shampoo'r without any water in it to just suck up the water and get the carpet totally dried out. Then use the carpet cleaner with water and detergent.

OHHHH NOOO!
That happened to us once. I'm SO sorry you're going through this. I feel your pain. Sounds like a job for Servpro, if you have them in your area. They came to our house and took care of everything. They were very professional. We filed a homeowners claim, because we had so much damage done to our house. We had to just rip out the old carpet and get new.
Good luck, hun. I'd definitely hire someone to do it professionally or else you could get black mold in there. That's a real health hazard.

Just use a wet/dry vac & suck up the water. The real problem will be drying out the carpet before it gets moldy.

The padding beneath is probably wet as well.
If you do not remove the carpeting and padding it may develop mold. If this area is adjacent to a wall you may have dampness/mold issues in the drywall as well.
