I recently ordered a D620 Dell laptop notebook computer to use at my university, since it is mandatory to have. This is my first computer (of owning), are there anything I should be aware of and/or check for, when it arrives by delivery? Thank you!

It will come with everything you need in the box - pretty much the computer itself and a charger. You will probably want to get a case so you can carry it around (throwing it in a backpack may work for some, but I'm sure it was expensive and you'll want to protect it from slamming your backpack on the ground or the desk). You'll want to put a password in it so other people can't just get on and use you machine (you know, steal your term papers, etc) but make sure it's something you'll remember. If you have the money, buy a second charger to carry around and one to leave in your dorm or house so you can just plug it in and go. My dog ate one of my chargers, I was glad to already have a second one. Aside from that, you'll know pretty quickly if the machine doesn't work right. Make sure you put Antivirus and anti-spyware software on it right away, before you do anything else, and run Windows Update, too. Always keep your virus definitions up to date and always keep Windows up to date, too.

Enjoy your new laptop!

Charge the battery as advised in the manual. Recently there were problem with batteries of some laptops. I am not sure if Dell was involved. However check via the internet abaout it because it was a very serious matter and alot of the laptops were called back and the batteries replaced! I am serious, not being sarcastic or otherwise. They were some which actually burned!

ADDITION: Thank you DEMAMAN! As for the questioner please do check this important issue rather than anything else first.!!!

KCD was absolutely right, check with DELL to make sure that your battery is ok, because infact there were some problems with those infact they issued a HUGE recall of them. I am sure that since you are getting a new one, it should be ok but I would double check. Other then that enjoy. You don't have to charge up the battery to get the laptop to work. Just plug in your power cord and go at it. When you done using it, turn off the laptop but leave the power cord plugged in to let the battery charge.

only the batteries got recalled, not the laptops themselfs, plus ppl could still use their laptops at home until dell sent them a replacement battery by keeping them plugged in 2 the AC adapter, 2nd it wasnt dells fault it was sony cause sony was the manufacturer and supplier of those batteries, so anyway u need 2 look up ur battery type\model on dells website 2 find out if its one of the ones that dell recalled, if it is then ship it 2 them n theyll send u a free replacement.
