etc, im confused, i dont want to lose the sound quality from a cd, so i need help trying to find out what I need to do. thanks!

Well if you don't want to lose ANY sound quality, you'll have to use AIFF, which is the format that an actual CD is. The problem with that is, you'll only be able to get one and a half CDs per gig on an iPod or hard drive.
Using the highest bitrate mp3 or AAC trims the file size greatly for little the sound quality is compromised. You may lose the intensity of the deepest, thickest bass by 10%, and a big, rich orchestra may sound a pinch flatter, but a good stereo can make up for that by putting a little xtra bass and surround sound on it.

I'm sticking with mp3 files because i know what to do with them and they work well and are the most popular on the web. Apparently mp4 is better than mp3 though, but it cba to change all of my files to a different format, so i can't tell you if it's really better!

FLAC or SHN. Only use lossless formats.
