as already said a tracking cookie stroes information about which websites you have visited. Theroretically cookies can only be stroed for the site you visit, but some store tracking cookies for advertising compnaies (they link to the advertisign compnaies site) and these are used to tweak the adverts to what they think are more "interesting" to you.

In practise they are raltively harmless, they don't impact on how your browser works, but it does impact on the adverts or promotions you see.

some advertising led sites inisist that to use their site you must use cookies (usually thats how they sell the adverts).

Small data files that track where you may have been on the Internet or what you may have bought on-line. They are really pieces of spy-ware but will only give data back to the site you picked it up if you go there again. Try getting some anti spy-ware like spybot or adaware or set your browser to not accept cookies.

for example - some track previous site visits and store info like usernames etc, saving you trouble typing them in again.
