I like my job, the people, etc, but it isn't what I spent 4 years in school to do.

I expect you will last in that job for a few years until something more appealing comes along. It is really tough to go to work everyday to do something that you really don't particularly want to do.

Begin a plan that will take you where you want to go. My daughter (28 years old) is in a similar situation now. She has been in her job for almost four years. It is not a bad job, reasonable pay, but she wants more. So she has started a plan. She is getting all her bills paid off. She has started applying for the jobs she is interested in, always telling them that she would have to give appropriate notice at her current job. She is downsizing in her apartment - getting rid of the things she knows she doesn't want to take with her when (she says "when", not "if") she moves - her move will most likely take her 2000 miles away from where she is now.

When the time comes to move, your co-workers will understand perfectly. Some opportunity will present itself. The best advice I can give you is to be open to the opportunities when they do present themselves and take advantage of those opportunities. Getting that job that you really want won't likely be about luck, but more about planning and making it happen. Life is too short and precious to spend it doing something that isn't really what you want to do.

Take care and I wish you well in your career, whatever you decide to do.

It sounds like whether or not it lasts is up to you. It's so easy to get diverted from our passions. That's what most people do. But there's a lot more to life than taking care of necessities and even obtaining luxuries. People who engage their hearts have a different kind of life altogether. Takes some courage and determination to follow your calling. Good luck! Hope you find your way there.

I know several people like this. they have lasted for a few years, some of them still going, but are a bit desatisfied. they feel as if they wasted all that time in school. Just look at it as if you are just getting your feet wet in other fields, getting experience, hoepfully, this will help you in the long run on the field of your choice

What you studied for in school or went to school for was your dream job. that does not mean it is the best job for you. If you like what you are doing, apply what you learned in school to what you like doing.
