Surely a soft-top should be lighter than a hard-top fixed roof car. Maybe it's the mechanics in the soft-top...

The weight isn't in the roof, it's all the extra mechanisms and motors required to lift it up and down.
There is also a bunch of other hidden stuff that has to be added to the car, to make it more rigid. Otherwise the car would twist due to not having the rigidity of a hard roof.

ok, i'm assuming you fairly do not understand something approximately Porsche's different than what they appear like, so i bypass to attempt to condense the previous solutions into some thing you could understand. Porsche is a overall performance variety, and hence overall performance is their considerable priority, not luxury plenty. through fact of that, a folding annoying actual could upload a pair hundred kilos probably to the load of the motor vehicle, and that weight could be extra interior the thoroughly incorrect places. a cloth actual is plenty lighter, requiring much less bracing for the folding mechanism, much less bracing for the actual itself, extraordinarily up severe (with the actual up) the place the extra weight could be. Secondly, Porsches are rear-engined. it is, the engine is interior the back of the motor vehicle, the place your trunk is on a Mercedes. With the engine there, the place could you place a annoying actual? the respond is, nowhere, there is nowhere to place it until you made it a 2 seater. yet that would desire to basically make for a messy retraction equipment to fold it forward. The trunk on a 911 series automobile is fairly interior the front of the motor vehicle, and there is not sufficient space in it for a roof the two. So, through fact of that, it must be a delicate actual.

Typically 75 - 100 kilos of meaty metal gets added, then think of motors and braces in the fabric frame. It's usual for a soft-top to feel twisty and sloppy, compared with the coupe.

The normal car body gets strength from the entire body. That is why it is called UNIBODY. When you cut off the top half, there is no benefit from UNIBODY construction where loads are distributed.

So, to gain the required stiffness, they reinforce it with heavy bar/channels of steel. It adds significant weight to the car.

When you take the lid of of a car you lose its monocoque strength and has to be strengthened with extra bracing. This is also the reason why they are more expensive.
