If you are really concerned about them, buy them a sandwich or some chips rather than give them money. I would not give my local homeless people money or food, because 99% of them get assistance from the State. And what do they do with MY hardearned tax dollars? Buy drugs and boose. No thanks, I think I'll buy my kids some shoes.

NO! I'll give to church, charities, buy the 'feed the children' coupons when I check out of the grocery store, but never again will I give to a beggar.
I'm a single mom raising 2 kids without any support and I am unwilling to give away money.
I am in Long Beach and see people that need it but most are just beggars.
The other day I almost gave in. I was walking into Sav-on and this guy asked me for 90cent I figured 'what the hey' I said "no problem catch me on the way out" This MAN pulls out a pack of cigarettes sits his butt in a patio chair and says "Cool can you make it 2 bucks" I was in RAGED and went off! Told him to get his lazy butt a job and stop begging hard working people for money!
I have seen people use their kids to beg and the walk into a parking lot get into a Mini Van and go home kids in the back with ipods! NO MORE!!

Yes, I have and I would. We don't always know the reason why they need money, so, if I have a little in my pocket, I give it away. I gave money for Hurricana Katrina, which I felt would go toward helping those who were homeless from the effects of the hurricane. We are taught to be kind and to help the poor. I can only pray that the money goes to help them in a positive way. Good question, though.

I try to give them food first, but if i can't i will give them some money. I don't live in a big city, so I never see homeless people unless i go to a bigger city. I always give homeless people food or money, but if i lived in a city where they were heavily populated i would not. I really think people should give them a cheeseburger or something.

The act of kindness and generosity lies in the person doing it, not the person receiving it. You cannot decide what a person does with a gift after you give it - that is why it's called a gift. You could speak words of encouragement, even suggest a place where they can get free food. Just don't stop being kind and generous because of what happens after you give the gift. Just know that we are supposed to help each other and be happy that you are doing it.

I stopped giving money to the poor. They lie about where the money is going.
Once I went to a store down the street where there was a homeless guy saying he was hungry and needed money.
So after I left the store I went home made him a sandwich-gave him chips and a soda and brought it back to him.
Buy them food rather than give them the money.

a better idea is to save your cardboard boxes,3 or 4 of those and a homeless person can fashion themselves a house, then they can rent a room out and get a steady income

Many times I give them food instead of money. I buy them a sandwich or grab something out of my grocery bag to give to them.
