Are you reading novels from the 50's or 60's? Or it could be the people have retro furniture and it is a current novel.


btw Formica was/is a kind of plastic that was used as a top surface on tables.

Are you reading novels by the same author? If so, this is probably why. I know Dean Koontz (for a while) wrote about sodium vapor street lamps and bouganvellia (I think I spelled that incorrectly. It's a plant/vine that grows in California.) in most of his novels.
