Don't get me wrong, the guy was great and I'm sorry he's dead but what next...? State funeral for Dame Edna, or how about Rolf Harris. Is Madge from Neighbours dead yet?

I am shocked my lovely green friend that dollbaby could be so offensive.....uncalled for.

Anyway, Gentsy, the family of Steve Irwin have turned down the offer and said he was "a normal bloke" and would not have wanted all that fuss. I guess that's is one of the reasons he was so popular in Australia.

I think the offer of a state funeral may seem odd to us Brits who are used to only offering state funerals to dead Prime Ministers and royalty (Princess Di's funeral was not a state one officially as she had been stripped of HRH). But, on the other hand the basis of the Australian state funeral seems to be given on "merit." It was acknowledged that Steve Irwin did a lot for conservation, while at the same time putting Australia on the map for many people. He loved his country.

It would be nice if merit was the basis of more things in this country (e.g. honours system for people doing good works in their community rather than industrialists giving money to political parties).

Sorry Gent - I promise to be hilarious next time!!! Bit of a ramble I know......zzzzzzzzzzzz

Your hyperlinks are defective, yet you're maximum suitable, the tape would be destroyed, and CNN will coach photos of Irwin yet no longer the tape of his dying. besides the fact that, it is not a query by making use of you and that i think of anybody needs to place off the Irwin undertaking at this factor. it is old and getting somewhat stale now. Yahoo has made specific those hyperlinks do no longer artwork (they disabled them) for those that save posting this repeatedly, thank goodness. And to the poster who reported they was hoping the funeral became into as great as Reagan's. You and your demented ilk are component of the priority in the worldwide in the present day. loss of brains!

An Australian state funeral would be something else. All those sandals and socks, long shorts and big bellies. The warm horrible lager and some dame with a burnt nose singing crocodile shoes. All the Holden's doing donuts and a fist fight to end the night. Ahhhh, classy.

I agree, and the family has declined a state funeral. Too much is being made out of this. It is a tragedy yes, but those happen each and every day. Everyone will die one day, including all on this forum. Peace to Irwin's family and now it's time to move on to other IMPORTANT issues of the day that affect the world at large.

A state funeral? A joke surely? I've been out this afternoon and haven't seen the news yet.

His father declined the offer, if they got it in the news right. Its not because of his celebrity factor it was offered. It was for his services to the country in protecting wildlife, being a massive tourism ambassador and setting up huge areas for conservation. I'd rather see him get a state funeral for doing good, than watch Thatcher over here get one.

I don't think the family agreed to one in the 1st place. And if they did, he's done a lot for that country, raising $ and awareness, making tourist $ come in, working to save their wildlife, etc... What have the people you mentioned done? It's not comparable!!!

I think his family has declined a state funeral. They said Steve wouldn't have approved.
