I know it is an age old question and one that many have pondered on but... I have just taken my washing out. I know what socks went in and how many and they were all in pairs. I am now missing three socks! All from different pairs! I have checked the inside of the door cos can usually find all sorts in the rubber seal and have made sure they are not caught up in other clothes, but no they are gone, vanished, disappeared of the face of the planet. Where are they?

I know your question is not entirely serious but click on the link below, a fella actually wrote a paper about the missing socks that he backs up with scientific data.

There is a special place in the universe where single socks go to find a mate. Being that you have there one and only match in life, they go to the great beyond. The answer is to throw the mate away and buy a new pair for they will never again be seen together!

This really is one of those socking questions. No one knows, and will never find out the naswer. Socks just go off on their own, to party, for a walk, whereever the facy takes them. Its like the Bermuda Triange or the Loch Ness monster, the mystery continues. Next time try putting them into one of those wash bags, yet I fear they will still escape.

The sock monster grabs them from the little fabric softener dispenser in the agitator. He makes them reappear when you have finally given up and throw the sock you have away.

actually my father in law once took apart the washing machine to fix it and found quite a few under the agitator. Some from when my hubby was smaller lol. but don't do it yourself....might be time to let the monster have em.

I think sock manufacturers dye left socks with a weaker dye than right socks so when you wash them they're all odd thus making you believe in sock gnomes so then you go out and but more socks that seem to disappear too. it's a conspiracy to flood the world woth socks. before you know it sock gnomes will have all the power.

Are they playing hide and seek again? They are so good at the game. One way to solve the problem is to pin a pair together before throwing them into the dryer. But watch out for those hot pins.

glad it isnt just me..i have a bag full of odd socks with no partners....want to solve the problem??? if you have put them in with other clothes ..how many times have you worn your jeans/trousers and found a lump at the back of your trousers..no its not a cyst..its a missing sock...get a laundry bag/net and put all your socks in...count your losses and throw away your odd socks as if like me you will have them in a drawer forever.

i asked this question about 2 weeks ago and decided upon it being the sock monster who lives in the washing machine, where upon you discard your three odd socks you will find that the other three will turn up next time you do laundry leaving you baffled

No usually they get caught in the dryer behind the dryer drum as it spins to dry your clothes. Check there.
