Good knowledge of games, current technology and the industry as a whole.

You will also have to oversee many aspects of how your game develops which will require strong leadership and communicational skills including managing the morale, motivation and development of the design team working on the project.

Having innovative ideas and original concepts will be necessary if you want success with a career as a games designer and you will need to be competent at getting these ideas across to other people which may require artistry skills (which you say you don't have) to create concept drawings etc.

You would generally not go straight to becoming a games designer but rather start off with a lesser job until you know how things work within the industry.

With success you could expect to earn around £40 - £60k a year as a games designer although don't expect to see a position going at your local jobcenter any time soon :)
