I ask this because a man i know has mono and is losing weight rapidly, coughing, fatigue, e.g. is it possible this is a sign of HIV.

It seems to me he has a blocked capillary. I don't think this is a symptom of HIV, but I would get him to see his doctor as soon as possible.
