We feel guilty when we do something (or fail to do something) that we know goes against what we were taught by our parents or by our religious beliefs. Some unfortunate people feel guilty all the time, taking responsibility in situations for which they are otherwise completely blameless. I believe this occurs as the result of parents who were either too strict or implanted guilt in their child. I can remember my mother scolding me for not eating all my dinner while the poor children in China were starving. To this day, I feel guilty about not eating everything that's on my plate!

We feel guilty because we were given a conscience that knows right from wrong. The question should be, do we act upon our guilty knowledge?

Because people try to fit in and be what they don't want to be. Society has a lot of rules of how to be and when you don't follow that you can feel guilty.

In psychology and ordinary language, guilt is an affective state in which one experiences conflict at having done something one believes one should not have done (or, conversely, not having done something one believes one should have done). It gives rise to a feeling that does not go away easily, driven by conscience. Freud described this as the result of a struggle between the ego and the superego (parental imprinting). Guilt and its causes, merits, and demerits is a common theme in psychology and psychiatry. It is often associated with depression.

Because we falsely believe we are responsible for the emotional state of others, as they are responsible for our emotional state as well. Thus we feel guilty, when we do something we know would affect our emotional state negatively, if someone were to do the same thing to us.

Because most people have some level of compassion for others. If we hurt someone we think about how it would feel to be in their shoes. Knowing that it would hurt to be them makes us feel sorry.

Because people have things called conscience embedded in their systems. So when they know they did something wrong they fear punishment or worst. Some mentally unstable people don't have a conscience though.

It is part of human nature. Our brain's emotions make us feel guilt. It sets us apart from other living things who can't comprehend guilt. Those that don't feel guilt are labeled a psychopath.
