.....or, Which are the questions that a potential future employer should/could/required to ask when calling the employees present job to inquire about the caliber of the employee? I know age, and marital status and children are a few, but I think there are some basics that he should ask, what are they?

Where I live (eastern Canada) the laws say an employer cannot ask about religion, marital status, age, race, sexual orientation, or anything personal. An employer can ask only about the individual's skills, qualifications, compatibility with colleagues, work ethic, work habits, and other characteristics that pertain to the job the individual is leaving and the one the individual has applied for.

They can not ask anything that is a matter of opinion. They can only ask about facts. They also can not ask anything personal. They can only ask about things pertaining to work.

I think your old employer is only allowed to verify employment. All else can't be disclosed.

Most companies will not give out references anymore over the fear of lawsuits

He can't ask you any questions pertaining to shaving.

you can't ask about religion or sexual orientation. I'm sure there are others but I can't think of any.
