I've got a plumber here who is telling me some black iron piping was used in my water line and it is toxic and needs to be replaced.

Is that true? Or is he just trying to find other ways to soak me?

It is true. Black iron should only be used for drainage, fire suppression, and gas. Never for potable water.

Black iron pipe is not toxic. Black iron is used for gas lines and is subject to rusting. Home water pipes should be either galvanized steel or copper.

Its not toxic but its not the best for water as it will rust out over time or plug up. I used copper in my house but the new way is to use PEX tubing. It can be bent & used for either hot or cold water. It was developed for radiant heating.

first of all is it black iorn or galvanised iorn, galvanised pipe can be used in the plumbing system but black iorn will rust away in no time on a domestic system. i dont know about toxic but will leave rust deposits as it is disolving in the system like when your water heater is getting ready to expire it will leave rust deposits in the system as the glass liner is worn out and the water is disolving the tank, hope this helps
