Ernst Ruthorford performed some cool experiments with gold foil and came up with the orbital theory for atoms. In a nutsell: a nucleus containing proton and neutrons is orbited by negaitvely charged electrons.

Rutherford discovered that the atom was mostly empty space. He did an experiment involving gold foil and charged particles. Most of the particles passed through the foil with out incident while some bounced back. He determined that though the atom is small it still has enough mass to deflect the particles.

Rutherford inventions & discoveries are to many to list he worked on the atom.magnatism,sound to name a few.One to note todays smoke detectors have the basis in his work.

John Rutherford?? Dunno. But Ernest Rutherford discovered.... 'that each atom contains a positively charged nucleus' ...and this discovery led onto what we now know as Nuclear physics.

You should all stop answering these questions from school going pupils....they are so lazy they can not be bothered to read books & find out for themselves so they take the easy route on the internet...the result is a brain dead inarticulate generation of people who would rather play video games than actually interract with their surroundings & use the senses nature provided them with.
