Jim and Phyllis received a total of $50,000. They decided to put $10,000 in a trust for nephew and divide the remainder. Phyllis received 3/4 of the remainder and Jim received 1/4. How much did Jim and Phyllis receive? This is what I did Just tell me if I did it right....................
50,000--10,000=40,000
3/4a + 1/4a = 40,000
4a = 40,000
a = 10,000
Jim received 10,000
Phyllis received 30,000

I think my steps or the way I set it up is wrong. could someone help me? Thanks

Correct.

Could be better if your steps are changed as follows :

Total = $50,000
Amount left after putting $10,000 in the trust = $50,000 - $10,000
= $40,000
Therefore, Phyllis received (3/4 of $40,000) = $30,000
and Jim received (1/4 of $40,000) = $10,000

FINALLY, someone who does their homework first THEN just asks for verification. You have no idea how happy i am right now. second, your answer is correct, though you might have just said 3 * 40K / 4 = 30K (the same for 1 * 40K /4 = 10K). your equations are still great, just more detail than you need to solve.

At the same time, you might be careful... the question asks how much jim AND phylis received. the answer MIGHT be 40K, if its a trick question since the sum of their totals is still 40K either way. in other words, if your teacher is a jerk, it might be a trick question.

You are right dear!
The remaining amount is $50000-$10000=$40000
3/4th is 3/4*40000=$30000
and 1/4th is=$10000
Bye!
