Good question, I don't think either one is very effective, what kid doesn't like to get a few days off school?Unless the parents are making it a punishment at home as well ( no T.V., video games , computers etc.) As far as corporal punishment, I think that should be completely up to the parents. Do schools still give swats? If I hit my child with a board, family services would probably come and take them away, so why on earth would it be ok to let someone else hit them with a board? Discipline should start at home then hopefully it won't be a problem at school.

I think the best form of discipline would be to simply show the kid what he did wrong...and just make him understand why its wrong. I find understandin is the key to discipline...self-discipline that is, cuz the other kind, the one forced on you by a higher authority just never works now does it?...but thatz just my opinion anyway, so if i had to choose between a spanking or a suspention, i´d say suspention would be the way to go. At least it has a higher chance of makin the kid actually think about what he did wrong and how he can maybe prevent it from happening again...or it might just make him even madder...but its still way better than a spanking. Spanking never does any good, other than to scare kids into "behaving", which i think is just wrong.

Getting Suspended doesn't work and it never made sense to me "act up in school because you don't want to be there, so we are sending you home for 3 days?"...lame But as a parent if a school official hit, spanked, whooped "whatever" my kid, you'd see me on the news for being the crap out of that school official.
What worked for my kids is the school would call me and I'd walk right into class and have a "TALK" with them right in class. Needless to say when one of them would start in the teacher would just say she was going to call me again!.... and I only had to be called Once for each of them!

neither. Often times discipline is required because of acting out in a verbal or physical way..by striking a physical blow you only reassure the child that physical force is effective in getting desired behavior. Suspension gives kids a way out of facing responsibility for their actions...In school suspension is the way to go. This way their social interaction is restricted, their behavior is monitored and modified and time is given to reflect on the result of their bad behavior and how to avoid the restrictions in the future.

I'd go with neither. They're lazy and reactionary "punishments" that do not address the child's behavior. How about something useful like community service or something tangible like loss of privilege?
I nnnnnnnnne-hever did my homework in middle school. Most teachers would send a note home or send me to detention, but only one teacher took the time to sit in with me during lunch and recess, watching that I was actually working on assignments so that, hey, look, something's accomplished! I'm sure it's the last thing on earth she wanted to do, but I'm glad she took the time to actually address the behavior and took enough interest to see to it that I succeeded.

I was suspended for wearing too short a skirt.
Had I been spanked for the same misdemeanor, I feel sure someone would have lost their job...!

A spanking, without doubt. But from what I hear, I'm not sure they do that anymore except maybe way back somewhere in the sticks, for fear the parents might sue them.

NEITHER. I THINK THERE SHOULD BE COMMUNITY SERVICE. SCHOOLS SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO HIT A CHILD, SUSPENSION ONLY KEEPS THE CHILD OUT OF SCHOOL.. BUT IF YOU MAKE A CHILD CLEAN UP A PARK, OR VOLUNTEER IN A CARE HOME, IT WORKS MUCH BETTER
