It depends if you were entitled to Statutory Paternity Leave.
To be entitled you had to be working for your employer (the one you took the leave with) for 26 weeks before the 25th week of the pregnancy, and carried on working for them up to the date of the birth. If you satisfy this, and you applied in the correct way - handing in a form to your employer by week 25 of the pregnancy - then you could take up to 2 weeks of paternity leave and then it shouldn't have to be taken from your holiday entitlement.
If you did not qualify - because you had not completed the 26 weeks of service by the 25th week of pregnancy - you would not be entitled to Paternity Leave (yeah I know it sucks) but your employer might let you have the time off anyway and make you take it out of your holiday or take it unpaid.
We have this problem at the moment because my BF is changing jobs in October and our baby is due in December, so he won't be entitled to Paternity Leave from the new employer as he won't have been there long enough - this is a stupid system which totally sucks in my opinion. We are just praying that the new people will let him take some unpaid time off or take it as holiday because I am going to desperately need him around when the baby is born, not really having any family to help us.

No Paternity leave is not deductible from your annual leave entitlement. I maybe wrong on this but i think I'm right in saying that you are entitled to take up to 6 months unpaid paternity leave and 5 days paid leave at the expense of your employers.
Males have rights too!!

This is separate from annual leave, but dependant on how long you've been employed. You need to have 26 weeks continuous employment ending with the 15th week before the baby is due. Go back to your employer and refer him to www.businesslink.gov.uk. If you don't get anywhere and you feel you are entitled to paternity pay, contact ACAS who will help you sort it out.

on paternity leave you are entitled to 1 week at 90% and a further 2 weeks at 50% of your normal wage. When i went on my paternity leave i had the first week on paternity leave and i had another 2 weeks outr of my holiday so my money wouldnt be affected so badly.
If in doubt contact the benfits agency or the inland revenue

No. Paternity leave is not classed as a holiday, so it does not affect your holiday entitlement. And when you are off, it definately will not feel like a holiday!

I thought men were legally entitled to paternity leave. I would query it if I was you. I know the men at my work are granted paternity leave above their normal holiday entitlement.

Most jobs do not provide paternity leave. You can use your own sick, vacation, compensatory or personel days for a stretch without any complaints. If necessary you can apply for family leave. It is provided by the government but you must fill out the appropriate paperwork, but you will not be payed for this, it is a way of keeping your job and helping with the newborn.

Your paternity leave nothing to do with your holidays. Your employer is wrong to say it is. It total separated from it.

no - paternity leave is an allowance allocated for that very reason. holiday is something completly different. contact inland revenue for downloadable docs that you can show your employer
