Why did the Arctic Moneys WIN the Mercury Prize when their MUSIC is crap?

Not entirely sure the Mercury's have anything to do with 'good' music. Its supposed to represent the best album of the year but as that's such a subjective thing you could really call into question the validity of the entire award.
Personally you may as well give the prize to an unknown in an attempt to raise their profile, I don't know what the F### the Arctic Monkeys are gonna do with 20 grand when they've sold millions of albums already. Personally I think they gave it to the monkeys because of the outcry when the Darkness didn't win it a couple of years ago (another overated band I may add) Its a sort of guilt award because of all the classic albums they missed by awarding the prize to no-marks (Parklife?!!)
I'm just ranting now. Ignore the damn thing and get back to hating the Arctic Monkeys for the fact their massively overplayed on radio and pompous DJ's lick their backsides in a vain attempt to appear connected to the youth (despite being far too old!)

the arctic monkeys deserved that award, they rock they do not suck. They should be well respected, they were a asmall band from Sheffield who broadcasted their music through myspace.com and became known outside of the site appeared in media articles etc. etc. They made it the hard way through the music business and came out on top, their first single the irritatingly-but-so-catchy "I Bet That You Look Good On The Danceflor" went straihght to number one it was almost a year ago and look where they are now. do not diss the arctic monkeys

good album. not innovative - the streets have done that kind of thing before - but good nontheless. i dislike the current indie scene but it's a fantastic album. personally i thought scritti politti should have won but oh well.....

on a separate note....when the mercury prize was first introduced it was an alternative to the brit awards.....which is weird because the arctic monkeys will probably win a host of brit awards

These type of events are nothing to do with the quality of the music or fil etc. They are purely marketing tools. Surely anyone who watches them must realise that they are watching a giant advert. And the winners just seem to prove my point.

I'm sorry to say that I will have to disagree with you. I really like their music and can relate to a lot that they are saying. I think they are a breath of fresh air.

I think the main reason they won was because of the media. I personally don't think they should have won it (even though I like them). The media messes with so many things these days and I feel sorry for bands that get caught up in it.
