Most everyone has feelings of loneliness at one time or another. The reason it's rare to have a good friend forever is that people change and grow in different directions throughout life. Having a series of friends teaches you lessons about life, which is what we are here for (at least in my theology). It's hard, I know, to lose a good friend. As an example, I had a very dear friend from childhood and adolescence. By the time we hit our twenties we started drifting apart. It's taken me years to get over her, because she was so special to me. I attended a class reunion last year and saw her for the first time in a very long time. The old feelings were still there, on both our parts, but at the same time, I could see how different we were as people, and why the friendship petered out. You're going to have many friendships in your life, and if you're very lucky, one of them will stick permanently. But remember, this is a rare occurrence. You must be about developing your potential as a person in this life. And when you least expect it, that person will show up. Mine hasn't yet, but I know the day will come when it will.
