It seems to be idling high (around 1300) and using alot of gas, but ses light is not coming on. Any thing I can do without taking it to a shop?

The answer to your question has a lot to do with your mechanical skills. It sounds to me like there is some sort of idle regulation that is not working. This might be as simple as a throttle position switch switch that senses when the throttle is released and switches over to an idle circuit. Or it might be an MAF sensor, oxygen sensor or some other sensor.

I'd check for a throttle position switch first. In my cars, it is easy to get to and quick to adjust. However, you have to know what and where it is to do that. If you don't have engine skills, it will be hard to describe.

could be your oxygen sensor, my 95 was doing this but it also might be the water pump is going bad too i dont know which because both started giving me problems around the same time and i sold it before it got fixed, if your getting smoke from the exaust its def the oxygen sensor or you need new spark plugs and the lot

it could be a vacuum leak also listen when the hood is open and it is idling for something sucking air if it is then that also might be a problem.hope this might help you out

i agree, sounds like your throttle position sensor might be shot. especially if there is no light on.

The cheapest thing to try first...a new air filter.
