I've owned the same car for 20 years. When mine does this it's always the vacuum bellows near the tail stock of the transmission.

Your transmission takes its cues from different gadgets in your car. My car is very simple, it uses intake manifold vacuum to actuate various goodies inside the transmission. When the diaphram on the bellows gets old and hard, it shifts hard.

I bet your '91 doesn't have super advanced gizmos throughout, it probably works on the same basic principal as mine.

If there's a vacuum hose going to the tranmission, unplug it from the manifold and see if you can suck air through it. If you can, replace the little module it connects to at the transmission. If you can't, it's probably OK.

Hope you find what's wrong.
