Some times labor starts and will feel like you're getting your period, if that's happening, start timing. If you find a bit of blood on the paper if you wipe you can say with certainty that the baby will be there within 24 hours, Sometimes the labor starts with a vengeance, hurts like hell and of course if the water breaks that's another sign.
Congrats and Good Luck. Keep a positive attitude through the pain, when you think you can't go on anymore, tell yourself it'll be over at one time. Think about the little miracle you'll be holding in your arms very soon.
Happy delivery!

Lots of answers and things to start looking for. Loss of the mucus plug, a sudden burst of energy, contractions that are steady and increasing frequency and last 45-60 secs. Obviously water breaking means hurry to the hospital. Some people have back ache & back labor, others have nothing until water breaks and boom---the baby is there! My sister swears by the fact that you will "clean" out your bowels just before labor really begins. Lots of things can happen, but what actually happens for you could be different. Make sure you have good contact with your partner, have your bag ready, a birth plan ready, and start practicing good ways to relax. We took a birthing class and the instructor said to be sure to practice. We didn't---how hard can it be right? Yeah, well we are practicing this time for sure because trying to relax when the pressure is on is more difficult than it sounds. Good luck to you and stay calm!

Congratulations! Your gonna love being a mom. Its a lot of work, but its soooo worth it!!

For me, my water never broke so don't be depending on that to happen to know u are in labor. A good sign are contractions. Those almost feel like period cramps, but intensified by 10 times! At first mine occured every two hours on the dot! But everyone (of course) is different. Thats the best way that I can describe them. I wasn't sure if I would know what they were going to feel like but trust me, you'll definately know. There is also an outer layer surrounding the amniotic fluid and its pretty much mucus. So if u start to leak that (there might be a little blood in it as well so don't be alarmed) then that means that it has broken. Most importantly, if u are not quite sure call your doctor and they can tell u what u might be experiencing simply by telling them what u are feeling. Good luck and remember not to panic!

Well they always say you'll know when your in labor but thats not always true. My first labor I wasn't sure because I was having contractions but when I timed them they weren't exactly any number of minuetes apart you know 10minuetes then 7 then 9 then 5 and I was like are these contractions or braxton hicks? but after about 5 hours of wondering is this it - i finally knew this was it when the contractions became more painful and closer together. So I would say when you get painful contractions in your stomach or back its time to call or go to the hospital - whatever your dr tells you. They say contractions feel like a tightning of the stomach but I think they feel like period cramps that just keep getting worse. My advice is that first labors take a long time so wait to go to the hospital until they are 4 minuetes apart and try to eat something before you go. If your going w/ out the epidural stay at home for as long as possible - but don't wait too long. Mine as well be in the comfart of your home for as long as possible. Oh yeah and have your bag packed in advance - let me tell you from experience packing your bag while in labor sucks. Oh and when its time to push really give it all you got on every push use all your strength. On my first after about 1/12 hrs of pushing semi hard i finally told myself to give it all i had and thats when my baby was born - Good Luck!

back pain that comes and goes tightening of tummy then it relaxes. You should try the labor ball when you get to the hospital they have them just have to ask for one. there great its like a workout ball you sit on it and when you have a contraction kinda roll your hips around on it and really helps getting through them. Congrats to you by the way. BEST OF LUCK!!!

signs of labor include constant crampy feelings, in front or in your back, and obviously any leakage of water

just go with the flow, and enjoy your baby afterwards!
