Ethiopia

The regime of Meles Zenawi (Ethiopian Prime Minister) is the worst human right offender at this time. The election of 2005 was marred by violence and mass murder of innocent protesters after the current regime rigged the people's vote.

Later that year, the security forces of the regime rounded up hundreds of peaceful protesters and put them in solitary confinements. To penalize the protesters the prison official forced them to share 1 razor per 50 inmates to shave their heads. What a cruelty! Imagine when AIDS is so widely spread in Ethiopia, how you could force people into this!

I say this is the same (if not worse) as the barbarism perpetrated by Hitler in the WWII

an easier question would be "which countries have not abused human rights" big offenders are Saudi Arabia, the US, Chile (during the reign of Pinochet), Rwanda, South Africa... but seriously if you look around there have been gross human rights violations in hundreds of countries at one time or another. If you want to see who is at the top of the list and what they're doing... you should check out www.humanrightswatch.com

Human rights are by definition limitations on state power so it is inevitable that there is always some kind of tension between the state and the excercise and respect for human rights. All states have violated rights in one way or another...either by steping over their rights like killing, torturing, detining with out trial...or denying them the basic necessities of life that they have the duty to provide such as water, food, basic health care and education...
Those that top the list are Eretria,Ethiopia...Even the United states that is supposed to be the guardian of human rights yet continues to violate the rights of its citizens as well as that of other people...never mind what happend to the native indians...look arouind u, the evidence is there.

We all have different views on what we, and others, should be allowed to do. An individuals belief in their own rights, and on the rights of others, will fluctuate throughout their lifetime, depending on their own social standing/religion, their view point on those who govern them and how the changes may effect them directly.

e.g. the right to discipline children will mean different things to you if:

(a) you are a child
(b) you are a childless adult
(c) you are a parent
or
(d) you are a teacher

Ultimatley, what you are questioning is are there universal rights which should apply to all people, and can these ever be enforced.

Define human rights. What we think is a right is a privilege somewhere else and not even thought of in other places. We cannot impose our way on other people. Just because some bleeding heart in N.Y. or California says so, does not make it a Universal mandate.

As many have replied: a lot of countries have abused human rights! but one of the major violators is Israel. The scary thing is that they remain unchecked and unstopped by the UN or any other nation of power and influence.
