Vice-President Cheney's tax return equalled more than I have made in a lifetime, according to Social Security records. These are the people who we keep electing an expect them to care about how we live. I have worked hard all of my life, and served my country honorably in the military, and still can't make ends meet, even with income well above what is considered poverty level. I don't see how these people expect people to live on minimum wage, that won't even cover rent on a small apartment in most areas after a 40 hour week. Perhaps a requirement to take public office should be having to live on an income of minimum wage for at least a year, then they would quickly get the picture!

They are not, they are expected to rise above poverty on their own. Sometimes government aid is necessary and useful, sometimes it is taken advantage of. You can't have it one way, either you have it and risk having people take advantage of it, or you don't have it and risk having people who really need it live in poverty. People with secure jobs, high paying jobs, politicians and the wealthy don't care about those who have low incomes. It is a matter of people getting involved, civic participation to make the system better suited for the people and not a choosen few.

What are you spending your money on? Do you have many kids? Many bills? Spending money on stuff that you really don't need? People make decisions every day. It is their own responsibility to understand what is pretty simple to everyone with brain cells understands, you cannot spend more money than you make and remain out of debt. Also, actions have consequences. Life ain't free. If you spend half, just half, the time making your life better, like getting off of your butt and learn a different trade or whatever you would be a success. Spend your time on something constructive.

That doesnt matter. The low incomes are part of the way an entire group of people are kept in check. They are too busy struggling to pay bills and survive to pay attention to what is going on in government. They think no one cares and it leaves them too disenfranchised to vote.So they dont and nothing ever changes.

My grandfather supported 8 children, had a car, and owned a home. He was a high school graduate who was a paratrooper in Europe during World War II. How was he able to support these kids with his limited real world experience? He did not drive a brand new car like the majority of us. He did not have 50 inch TVs and surround sound DVD theaters. He did not have a cable bill. He did not buy the newest fashions just to impress people he did not like in the way we are so wont to do. It is not hard to survive on low income, it is however hard to maintain the illusion of not living on a low income when in fact you are. Bring the SUV back to the dealer and stop buying crappy fashions and 500 dollar cell phones!

It is ridiculous. Too bad the people who make the laws in regards to wage do not qualify for low income... otherwise the minimum wage would be much higher.
wmcritter,
Only if it were that simple. People who live below the poverty line their quality of life is so poor you can barely call it a life. I am apart of this group and I have a very hard time just trying to get by.

They are not expected to......they are expected to do whatever it takes regardless of consequences. But the rich elite don't care.
Just imagine....Warren Buffet is giving 36 billion to the gates foundation. If he gave only 35 billion he could give every man woman and child 1 million dollars and still have change left over.

I don't know. I'm still trying to figure it out. I don't want to hear get a better job because I have a Masters degree in education. I can't work because I am bipolar and can't hold down a job because of mood swings. I went from making $50,00 a year to living on $1400 a month. Life really isn't fun anymore.

You are suppose to try to educate yourself and try to better yourself, however with so many doors slammed in your face I see that there is a problem in this country, the rich are too rich and the poor are to poor and the only way to change that is organize and form a body and get people elected that isn't afraid of the rich and redistribute the money.
