I have changed the spout. I took the handle off it is a one handle kind. I see no washers. Are they deeper? How hard is it to just change the faucet? I have to do this my self. I can not afford a plumber. If I know the basics and have directions with I cant find on the internet I can do it.

First find out the manufacturer's name of the one-handle faucet. Go to Home Depot and get a replacement cartridge set for it. When you get home turn off the water to your house (there is probably no water shut off for just your bath tub). Follow the directions about replacing the cartridge. Turn on the water and test. If the hot and cold water has changed sides (hot on right) you will have to turn off the water again and rotate the cartridge 180 degrees.

The previous answer is not bad, but if the seat against the cartridge is chipped or worn you may need to reface it / or remove the seat and replace it
