Use a product called Dursban. It's sold under the Spectracide label and it comes in a concentrate that you dilute with water. Mix a 1/2 percent solution and spray it along the baseboards, under the sink and appliances, and along the edges of the carpet. Also around doors, and pipe entries. You can also use it on surfaces that don't come in contact with unprotected food. This is the same stuff that the exterminator will use if you call one. Until the roaches begin to taper off, re apply every couple of weeks. After that, no more than once per month or as needed.

Remember to do the entire house. If you only spray in one spot, they will move to the untreated areas.

It depends on how bad the situation is. If they are ever where even in the daylight I suggest you get an expert in to take care of it for you. You might be able to fight them yourself by making sure all food items are sealed in plastic or put into the refrigerator. You will have to make sure there is no water dripping from faucets or pipes. If you clean all of your closets and cabinets and place traps in many locations you might be able to get a better control of them. They have a very fast reproduction rate and the babies can have babies before you can read this paragraph.
