660 = 12x

Sometimes it helps to reword it.
717 is 57 more than something multiplied by 12.
So first you have to figure out what is 717-57. That would be 660.
So, something multiplied by 12 equals 660. That is 55.

If you buy 12 hats that all cost the same amount of money each, and you went into the store with $717 and came out with only $57 left, then how much did you pay for each hat?
Well, you know that the total cost for all 12 hats was what you went in with, minus what you came out with.

Is it just me or in her question, when it says 12x a number "by" 57, wouldn't that mean multiplying?
